Gambling Club for Children Raises Eyebrows in PragueAn “American- style” gambling club has opened in the Czech Republic’s capital city. This news would hardly cause headlines, except for one small detail: the casino’s target player is about 7 years of age.
The gambling club, which caters to children of preschool age, is modeled after a Las Vegas casino. The children may buy chips, which are in the shape of gold coins, to use in the site’s machines. The children win other chips, which they may redeem for prizes such as candy, stuffed animals, dolls, as well as more expensive prizes like electronic toys. The most expensive prize, which costs 32,000 chips, is a child’s Harley Davidson motorbike.
"We are generous in giving numerous rewards. If they play in our club and are at least a bit handy, they will gain more toys than they could buy for the same sum in a toy shop," said company spokesman Matrin Vozka.
The children’s gambling club is immensely popular, drawing hundreds of children each week. Vozka said that the club had been copied from a network of similar gambling rooms for children operating all over the world. He said that business is thriving, and that there are a number of companies involved.
Children attend the gambling club with their parents, who expressed mixed thoughts about the activity. On one hand, they said that their children took to the club quickly, and asked to come back frequently. However, they were somewhat worried about creating an addiction that would haunt their children as adults. “This can be a splendid beginning leading to a bad end," said a woman who came to the gambling center with her son.
Many psychologists back up parents’ skepticism, saying that gambling can be particularly harmful for children, who do not yet have the rational and logical tools that protect adults against addiction. Other experts questioned the legality of the gambling enterprise, citing Czechoslovakian law that forbids gambling for minors under 18.
Some experts, however, do not categorically condemn the new gambling establishment for kids. They believe that the same sort of moderation- style approach that experts generally advocate for adult gambling applies to the underage as well. "I would not fear it, but I would not support it either," psychologist Vaclav Mertin told a Prague newspaper, adding that there are many factors that contribute to a child’s psychological health. Another psychologist interviewed in the same newspaper, Petr Klima, said that the new children’s casino could be dangerous only if children become obsessed with gambling, asking to spend all of their free time there.
The club also offers the largest simulated mountain climbing wall in the Czech Republic, but the gambling machines, the company acknowledged, remain the most lucrative aspect of the club.
