College Athletes’ Gambling Out- of- Control, Say NCAA OfficialsThe National College Athletes Association (NCAA) decided to take action against rampant gambling among college athletes.
A study by the NCAA concluded that more than two thirds of male college athletes, and almost one half of female college athletes, participate in some form of gambling, be it sports betting or gambling on the internet. Over 20,000 athletes participated in the study, which was conducted over the 2001- 2002 school year.
The actual figures were 69% for college male athletes, and 47% of college female athletes. The athletes most likely to participate in any form of gambling were those in Division III. The figures were slightly, but significantly, lower in Divisions I and II. By sport, golfers, both male and female, were the athletes most likely to engage in gambling activities.
The gambling issue is one of those given great importance at an annual four- day national association- wide convention, in which –2,300 college athletes from all over the United States participated. The meetings will also focus on other significant issues such as the importance of doing well academically and racial and gender discrimination. In the opening remarks of his State of the Association Address, NCAA president Myles Brand is also expected to address the issue of gambling.
"The study shows it is a problem. We're trying to be proactive. Before problems happen, let's handle it," the NCAA's Rachel Newman-Baker said Friday at the start of the association's convention.
Newman- Baker said that she believed that many student athletes were not aware of the significant risks associated with gambling. She is working to make students more aware that even seemingly harmless gambling, such as tournament pools, may be risky for some people. She also wants student athletes to know that gambling violates their NCAA contracts.
“They need to understand what the ramifications are and that it can lead to much bigger things,” she said. “They don’t know when to stop, when to draw the line.”
United States Surgeon General Richard Carmona was also on hand to address participants. He told the athletes present that the current generation’s fascination with inactive activities, such as gambling, is contributing to an epidemic of idleness and obesity.
In order to bolster its message, the NCAA is bringing out the big guns: agents from the FBI will talk to each of the association’s 32 teams in the regional rounds of the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments. In previous years, the issue was only addressed by federal agents during the Final Four.
For those college athletes who do not heed warnings, penalties can be severe. NCAA athletes who are caught gambling may lose one year of playing eligibility. If the gambling is related to a student’s own team or school, the student may even face permanent illegibility. Betting in a pool and similar “secondary infractions” carry lesser punishments.
